Chapter 13

“What are you people doing on my property?” Pomerleau’s knees cracked and clicked as he shuffled closer. “What happened to that boy?”

“Go,” Mandy whispered. “Please go.”

“This is my property and I’m not going anywhere ’til one of you hooligans tells me what’s going on.”

Mandy looked to Robbie for permission before standing up. He clasped his hands behind his back, watching their interaction like a curious puppy and not the savage cur that he truly was.

“Just go, Mr. Pomerleau,” she said. “I’ll take care of this.”

He leaned in, squinting his rheumy eyes. “That you? Fisher’s girl?”

“We didn’t mean to bother you,” she said, hoping his poor eyesight and advanced years combined with the dim light in the barn would be enough to confuse him. If she spoke calmly, perhaps he would begin to question everything and return to his house.

Mandy slipped an arm through his, guiding him back outside. Lingering behind, Robbie watched them go. Mandy inhaled the fresh air. She wanted to grab the old man and run to his truck. But the old man hobbled along, his knees too weak to hustle.

“Who’s with you,” he asked. “I don’t know him. He one of Jake’s boys?”

“No, sir. He’s—”

The barn door opened. Mandy froze. They were too far from the idling truck to run for it. Pomerleau turned just as Robbie hit him with the wrench. Blood seeped from his nose. He fell to the ground, moaning. Then Robbie kicked him in the ribs.

“Old son of a bitch,” he muttered, raising his foot

“Please, no…” Pomerleau groaned. He let out a strangled cry when Robbie’s foot came down.

Mandy ran. It was her only chance. The tall grass scratched up her legs. The field ahead was riddled with prairie dog holes. If she dared to look back, one of the holes would snag her and break her ankle.

Robbie ran after her, panting. He hooked her shoulder and spun her around. She tripped. He bumped into her, then pushed her down.

“Fucking bitch,” Robbie spat. He wiped the spittle from his lips. The bloody wrench remained in his hand, like a new appendage.

Mandy laid in the grass, digging her nails into the soil. She tried to catch her breath, she tried to think. Pomerleau had been her last chance. She was either going to be murdered on the edge of the old farmer’s property or…

Or something much worse.

“You’re in a shitload of trouble,” Robbie said. “That old bastard is dead because of you.”

“Me? But you—” Killed him.

“No one knows me here. Not even you. You’ll be the one they’re after.” The police. The town. Her father.

“No…”

“Don’t you read the news? The police don’t care about solving crimes. They just want to lock someone up and forget about it. All they need to do is arrest you and that’ll be enough.”

Mandy didn’t think that was true, but then she remembered how hard her father fought to keep her out of jail. How he put her away in a special facility so she could “get better,” but never once asked her about what had happened.
